If you’ve never seen your days numbered in jelly beans, this video probably got you thinking about the meaning and purpose of your life. Its vivid portrayal of mortality drives home the question of how we will spend the time we have left. For some, it evokes sadness as they see death slowly encroaching, while for others, seeing their finitude inspires them to live every day to the fullest. As we treat each day as a gift, God comes alongside us by the Holy Spirit, teaching us to live well.

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12).

In light of our fleeting time on Earth, the Apostle Peter reminds us what our priority should be:

_Love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever” (1 Peter 1:22b-25).

As Christians, we’re not left counting down the days until oblivion. Our hope is eternal. The best way to maximize the time we have remaining is to center our lives on Jesus. Give each day to him. Surrender our weaknesses but also our strengths and talents to him. Create beautiful things to bless those around us, never forgetting to enjoy all the beauty he has created. With him at the center, we can love one another deeply and multiply the joy of others.
