When life is going awry, it’s only natural for us to want to do everything in our control to fix it and set us back on course. I don’t think there are many of us who would choose to be still and watch the fire of chaos burn brightly around us, popcorn in hand.

However, this is exactly what God had Moses tell the Israelites to do (minus the popcorn) when they were being chased by Pharaoh’s army out of Egypt. They were terrified, discontent, and fearful, asking why he “brought us to the desert to die?” (Exodus 14:11).

In our key verses today, we see Moses urge them to not be afraid and to stand strong. “The Lord will fight for you; you only need to be still.”

It can be so easy to feel alone in our battles and like God has abandoned us in the desert with no way out. We get so beaten down by the enemy, that we become too tired to fight. Dear Christian, you don’t have to fight alone. God is fighting for you and with you. You only need to be still and let him pick up your sword. In him, we can find eternal rest. While the world may mock us for doing nothing, little do they know we’re doing everything.

God doesn’t fight our battles like we would. He fights with his timing and will in mind. And he’s calling us to a very different position in battle than what our instincts are used to. Be still. Be still and know that he is God.

Lord God, I am so grateful that you promise to fight for me. When I feel tired, or beaten down by the enemy, please remind me to rest in you by faith. Open my eyes to see how you are fighting for and with me. Thank you that I know you will have the final victory.

Throughout This Day: Meditate on the fact that God will fight for you. The worship song Be Still and Know may help you quiet your heart and focus on him.

Be Still and Know
