I was going through a hard time, and on top of it, I was frustrated with my friend. My friend was trying so hard to be helpful, but I didn’t want help. I didn’t feel like I deserved it. I lashed out, and my friend patiently comforted me. I gave the silent treatment, but my friend gently asked questions, seeking to understand.
Worst of all, there was nothing I could do to repay my friend. My friend didn’t need me to do anything, say anything, or help in any way.
Have you been there? You need help, but don’t feel like you can ask for it? Have you felt guilty for receiving when you have nothing to give in return?
One day, my friend took me on a walk. “Sara, you’re not getting it. You are intrinsically worthy of love. It isn’t because you are kind, helpful, or a good person. You are worthy of love because God made you worthy of love.”
It took a few laps around the block for it to sink in.
God was using my friend to reveal something to me about God himself. I thought God loved us despite our unworthiness. But God loves us because he has made us worthy of love. Because God created us, he determines our worth, not us or our actions. Today’s passage says that God loved us while we were still sinners. God made us valuable.
You are worthy of love, and you couldn’t change that if you wanted to.
Isn’t that mindblowing? Isn’t that freeing?
God, I am so grateful that you make me valuable, worthy of love, simply because I am your creation. And you proved that you loved me before I ever knew or reached out to you, by sending Jesus to die for me. Thank you!
Throughout the day: Think about it. Do you believe that you are worthy of love? If not, why? What does the Bible say? If so—what would your day look like today if you lived like you believed it to be true?
