As children, we often question the wisdom of our parents. I know I did. I remember begging my mom to “be a softy,” which was a running joke as she would sometimes give my brother and me what we wanted, when she thought it wise. I don’t remember exactly what I wanted this particular time, but this time, Mommy was not “a softy.” Whatever I wanted was just not happening. Of course, I was not happy about it.

As an adult though, I am thankful for the “no’s” because now I can often see the why. Once in a while, when thinking back to my childhood, I will realize, “Oh, that’s why she said 'no'.”

It’s like that with God sometimes, too. I think I know what’s best for me, but sometimes he says “no.” It’s hard at the moment, but looking back, sometimes I see the why, and I’m so thankful.

In our text above, the prophet Jeremiah lived in a very difficult time, where he was seeing God’s judgment poured on Jeremiah’s beloved nation. I’m sure he must have questioned why, especially when the people didn’t listen to his warnings. But God had a plan, and he comforted Jeremiah by letting him know that he had a hope and a future for him. I want to always trust in the plan God has for me.

Dear Father, Thank you for the “no’s,” and for the times when we can finally see why. Help us trust you that you know best, and that we can trust your wisdom. In Jesus name, amen.

Throughout this Day: What is a “why” you have that you can lift up to God today?
