After King Nebuchadnezzar decreed that all must worship the golden image of himself, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego displayed great courage in refusing to worship any god besides Yahweh, the one true God. The danger they faced was real and immediate. Had they not faced the reality of being thrown into the fiery furnace, the courage they demonstrated by their refusal would have been considered trite.

Likewise, you may be facing extreme pressure to compromise your convictions about God’s word or will for your life. You may be at the point of losing a job promotion, a relationship you cherish, or a thousand other situations that can seem threatening. Let the example set by Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego compel you not to give in to the demands of our culture, or to the persuasion of others living contrary to God’s word. Stand strong even if they are convinced they know the decisions you should make or the path you should take.

Stand firm upon the biblical principles that govern your life. By doing so, God will use the courage you display to draw others to Christ and to strengthen your own faith in the process. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego experienced God’s miraculous deliverance because they chose to trust in God and defied the king’s command.  As a result, Nebuchadnezzar praised God because he realized that no other god could save in the way God had delivered these three.

Father, help us to courageously stand upon the biblical principles laid out in your word. Let the example of other believers that display great courage in the face of opposition compel us to do the same. As we do, may you be glorified. Amen.
