When we encounter a new limitation or even struggle with existing ones, it is tempting to believe the lie that these limitations will make us less useful in some way. I was tempted with these thoughts myself when I experienced new physical challenges after battling Crohn’s disease for several years. However, God’s Word says otherwise. In fact, the very limitations we have are an opportunity for God’s power to work through us. Whether our limitations are physical, cognitive, social, emotional or environmental/material, God is not restrained by them. His ways are far beyond anything we could imagine (Isaiah‬ 55‬:8‬).

God’s power works best in weakness (2 Corinthians‬ 12‬:9). If we focus on our limitations we may not see opportunities that God has planned specifically for us. It wasn’t until I changed my focus from my weakness to God’s greatness that I realized God was directing me to a new path. We may face existing challenges, unexpected detours or even abrupt stops on our journey through life but any limitations we experience make space for God’s supreme resources. We can have hope because “we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians‬ 2‬:10‬). That means he will empower us with his strength to do whatever he has planned for us.

When you are facing limitations go to God with your disappointments (Psalm 55:22). He will comfort you (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) and will show you which path to take as you trust in him (Proverbs 3:5-6). If you are facing a new limitation, don’t give up hope. Sometimes God’s plans for us include new dreams and passions as well as the grace to follow new paths he sets before us. Reflect on Isaiah 43:18-19, “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

Lord help me to see my limitations as opportunities to be filled with your supreme power so that I can continue to serve in your kingdom in meaningful ways.

Take Action: The next time you can't do something because of a limitation in your life, ask God to reveal new opportunities for you to serve and pray for courage and discernment as you move forward on the path he sets before you.
