“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.” (Mt. 13:44-46)

The other day my six-year-old asked me, “Mom, what’s heaven like?”

To a six year old, it’s just a question, like “What’s for lunch?” But I feel intimidated. I don’t what to say the wrong thing; but I can’t brush it off either. It is my responsibility, and my joy, to teach my kids the truth found in the Bible.

I silently say a quick prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to give me the right words to say.

“Remember how much fun you had at the beach this summer?” I ask him. “Remember how you were jumping in the waves, and trying to run from them as they washed up on shore? Remember how you didn’t want to leave when it was time to go, and you kept asking to catch just one more wave?”

The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure.

Heaven is better than any day at the beach. It’s more exciting than any birthday party could ever be. It will certainly not consist of strumming on a harp in eternal boredom! A favorite toy, or the best vacation could never compare.

This is why the Apostle Paul penned, in 2 Corinthians 4:17, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” What we experience on earth, all of our troubles as well as our delights are dwarfed by the joy we will feel when we receive eternal life, the life we were created for. (2 Cor. 5:5)

Dear God, Thank you that when we love and trust in your Son Jesus Christ, we have the hope that we will be eternally satisfied by you in heaven. Help us to live heavenly-minded today, knowing that our circumstances in this life are temporary. Give us joy as we go about our daily tasks, trusting that we will one day have all of our deepest longings fulfilled by being with you. Amen.
