“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.” 1 John 1:1-3

A witness is someone who sees, hears, or knows something by personal presence and perception. We can confidently talk to people only about what we ourselves have experienced. What is our witnessing all about? Jesus Christ and Him crucified: His death, burial, and resurrection — that He is the way, the truth, and the life, the only way to salvation.

We need the help of the Holy Spirit in our witnessing. It is the Holy Spirit that can transform a life, so we need to depend on Him so that our light can truly shine to impact others for God.

We can witness to people through our words, as well as through our actions. Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:29 not to “let any unwholesome talk come out of [our] mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” He also has this to say concerning our life’s example: “so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky” (Philippians 2:15).

Are people drawn to God through your life?

Father, help me to maximize every opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus with those You bring across my path, so that my light can truly shine to bring You glory. In Jesus name I ask, amen.
