Pastor Sam Storms writes, “Rarely does a Christian struggle to think of God as Father. And to envision God as Son is not a problem for many. These personal names come easily to us because our lives and relationships are inescapably intertwined with fathers and sons here on earth. But God as Holy Spirit is often a different matter.”
How about you? Is it difficult for you to imagine who the Holy Spirit is, and what he does?
Sam Storms continues, “the Spirit is not third in rank in the Godhead but is coequal and coeternal with the Father and Son, sharing with them all the glory and honor due unto our triune God. The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal power or an ethereal, abstract energy. The Spirit is personal in every sense of the term.”
In our passage today, we learn that Jesus calls the Holy Spirit our Helper. The Holy Spirit literally helps us know and walk with God. This is because He is God. He fulfills Jesus’ promise that “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Jesus says, “he dwells with you and will be in you.”
Friend, the Spirit is not an unknowable force. It is not a vague idea. Rather, he is God himself, who daily helps us know, understand, and walk with God. What difference would it make in your day to realize God is your Helper?
Lord Jesus, thank you that you have given us a Helper to be with us forever. With you, we are never strangers or orphans. Instead, through your Holy Spirit you walk with us closely. Amen.
Throughout This Day: Read the rest of John 14. Notice how Jesus encourages his disciples as he prepares to depart. Imagine him speaking to you with the same warmth and welcome.
