This month, in Canada, we celebrate “Family Day.” This is a relatively new holiday for us, usually the 3rd Monday of February in most provinces. First started in 1990 in Alberta, it is interesting that, along with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, we also prioritize a day of showing love to our family!

There are no established traditions surrounding Family Day as there are for Christmas and New Year’s Day, for example. But, as the name implies, many Canadians take advantage of the three-day weekend in February to spend extra time with loved ones. Road trips, winter sports outings, and extended family gatherings are all popular ways to observe the holiday. Celebrants find ways to overcome the cold and have a warm and cozy Family Day!

Every day should be “family day” for us, as believers! Our Christian brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers, also need to be reminded of our love for them! Just as we prioritize our immediate and extended family members in acts of kindness, Paul encourages us to “do good to all people but especially those who belong to the family of believers.” We are reminded that we should not let tiredness keep us from doing this, because God’s promise is that he will bless us with a harvest of goodness just when we need it. Let God use you to pour out his blessings to both of your families today, and each day!

For Today: How will you celebrate both of your families this month? Ask God to point out members of your earthly family, as well as your “faith” family that need to know that you love them.Decide on some way to communicate that love, whether through a card or spending extra time with them this month. At church, look around at all of your family members, and thank God that we are all family!

Father God, please remind me this month how blessed I am to be in the family of believers, and help me to find ways to show love to them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
