This verse challenges me to attentively observe what I say and what I do.

We can say that we do something, yet there is no follow through with our words. That is not heart integrity. What does it mean to abide in him and walk as Jesus walked?

<a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+15%3A1-8&version=NIV" "target=_blank">John 15:1-8 was an illustration that depicted a branch abiding in a grape vine as our relationship with the Lord and his word. To abide in him means to dwell or live with his word in our heart. It is through his word that we come to know Jesus Christ and walk in his attributes.

When we read the four gospels, we get an excellent picture of how Jesus walked. He always spoke the truth. He was gentle and kind to children. He was an excellent teacher.

He challenged the Pharisees who were the religious leaders. They enforced rules on the people that they themselves did not follow. He said that they were like whitewashed tombs, full of dead men’s bones. He challenged their pride.

His word teaches us how to walk the way he walked. It challenges my heart. Are my words life-giving? Am I kind to those who treat me harshly or do I retaliate? Do I carry an offense in my heart, or do I readily forgive those who sin against me?

Father in heaven, I want to thank you for giving us your word as a guideline to follow. Thank you for your truth that sets our hurting hearts free. May we honor you with our lips and our actions. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Throughout this Day: Ask God to challenge how you speak to and treat others today and allow the Holy Spirit to abide in you as you abide in him.
