Sometimes I just don’t understand the Bible. I try to read because I know it’s God’s Word and He speaks through His word. But often I don’t know what He’s trying to say. It just seems like there are a lot of stories about a bunch of people who lived a long time ago.
The Apostle John, who was very close to Jesus, admits that the disciples — the ones who spent every day with Jesus — did not always understand what Jesus was saying and doing either. I must admit that I take comfort in that. The ones to whom Jesus spent countless hours teaching did not get it.
How did these 12 men go from puzzled followers to the pillars of the Christian faith as we know them today? I think the answer lies in the events following Jesus’ resurrection.
Luke records in Acts 1:3 that Jesus spent 40 days with them after he rose from the dead. He went to the scriptures that these Jewish men knew well and explained how all of the things that happened to Him were the fulfillment of prophecy. The resurrection and redemption for all mankind were God’s plan all along. He opened their eyes so they could understand (Luke 24:45).
Understanding the Bible comes through time spent with God — praying and allowing God to show us the meaning of His Word. It is a life-long practice. But God is faithful to teach us and open our minds to know Him better.
Lord, help me understand the words I read in the Bible. Open my eyes and my mind. Amen.
