Forrest Fenn flew 328 combat missions in the Viet Nam War and won the Silver Star. He is better known, however, for launching a search for treasure hidden in the Rocky Mountains, a chest he filled with a fortune in gold nuggets, rare coins, and gemstones.
More than 350,000 people scrambled over thousands of square miles searching for that treasure. Five men lost their lives in the attempt. It was finally found in June of 2020.
Jesus tells a parable about another treasure. The finder sells everything to own it. In the end he has no house, no furniture, no pots and pans, only a deed to the field where it’s hidden. He’s found a treasure, and his joy is overwhelming.
What is Jesus trying to tell us?
- This treasure is hidden in the fields of your life. Can you find it? It’s there, hidden in plain sight, but you have to look.
- It’s worth more than everything else you have. “Sell it all!” Jesus says. No, not literally. He means don’t let anything keep you from it.
- It will bring great and lasting joy to your life and heart. It’s more desirable than gold, sweeter than honey, and it will revive your soul.
Unlike Forest Fenn’s treasure, you won’t die searching for it. “If you search for God with all your heart and soul, you will find him” (Deuteronomy 4:29). Yes, you really can find him. He’s the key to the fullest life you’ve ever known.
Father, thank you for giving all you have to give to us, your beloved children. Help us truly treasure you and your will.
Throughout This Day: God is your treasure, and you are his. Thank God often for the fact that you have been bought with a price that defies expression, and ask him to work in your heart through his Spirit so that your love for him continues to grow day by day.
