Do you struggle with wrongs that have been done to you? Maybe you find it is easier to forgive some people more than others. The command from the Lord to us is not to forgive only the effortless wrong-doings. No, his word states to forgive one another as the Lord has forgiven you. The conclusion is that we are to forgive all – no matter the situation – for the Lord forgives us.

The disciple, Peter, asked Jesus in Matthew 18:21-22 about forgiveness. Here Jesus gives us the directions to forgive: Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”

Throughout the Bible we encounter various forms of the mandate. We find in Ephesians 4:32 to be kind to one another, forgiving one another even as Christ forgave us. There is the reminder again of the forgiveness that is extended to us. How can we be forgiven and not offer forgiveness? In Matthew 5:44 we are told to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. There is no doubt forgiveness is a choice. However, to continue to receive forgiveness – we must forgive, as well.

Forgiveness is an instruction. It is our responsibility to forgive every one unto the obedience of Christ. When we forgive one, but not the other, we are not walking in a manner pleasing to the Lord. In fact, we are still in sin. We must forgive all – even ourselves – to be in right standing with God and His word.

Forgiving frees us. Forgiveness keeps us from holding someone prisoner when we cannot control the consequences of their actions. Obeying the Lord to forgive lifts the burden of our own suffering and leaves it at the feet of Jesus.

May you know forgiveness – both in giving, and in receiving. Forgiveness is the only way we can freely live for the glory of Jesus.

*Heavenly Father, sometimes I struggle with the wrongs that have been done to me. Please forgive me and help me to forgive. I ask you to help me forgive all, not just those who are easy to forgive, Lord. I want to forgive as you have forgiven me. Thank you, dear God. I pray, in Jesus’s name. *

Throughout this day consider your own life and your thoughts toward others. Are you holding a grievance against anyone that you need to forgive?
