Growing up, my brother, my two sisters, and I had specific purposes while watching TV. My job was the remote control (meaning I got up and changed the channel when needed). My brother was the bandwidth engineer (meaning he changed the angle of the antenna when the picture got fuzzy), and my sisters were the DVR (meaning they gave the recap of what happened when someone had to leave the room). I cherished my job as the remote control because I was in charge.

Fast forward to when I grew up and got my first universal remote control. I thought to myself “this changes everything.” (yes, the pun is intended.)

There are times in our lives where we think to ourselves, “I got this” and we think everything is under control — only to have someone walk in and change the channel on our lives, which puts it in complete disarray.

But when you belong to Christ and have the Spirit of Christ living in you, it is like God handing you a universal remote control which has changed your life forever. No longer does sin, your emotions, your spouse, your friends, or even your job control you. You are guided by Someone who loves you unconditionally and can make things clear when life gets a bit fuzzy by showing you a better angle of viewing it.

It’s OK. Take great comfort in knowing this. Better yet, you can have the DVR job and tell someone else about it.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the Holy Spirit and the comfort you provide. Please remind me daily that I am not controlled by my sinful nature, but lovingly guided by you who give me a clearer vision in my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Go Deeper — Think back to what controlled you five years ago…10 years ago…15 years ago. Reflect on how you have grown and changed and then share your testimony with someone else.
