Our society rewards self-assurance, independence, and world knowledge that opposes biblical truth. As a result, many people often find themselves searching for the “right" answers for life in the wrong places. As Christians, we are tremendously blessed to have the entire counsel of God’s word, to know God’s wisdom, and to distinguish truth from error. Through studying scriptures, application, and prayer, we can recognize false teaching and let false doctrines go “in one ear and out the other.”
For many years, I have tried to witness and build conversations with a neighbor who practices Buddhism. My spiritual growth and knowledge have been enhanced by studying the scriptures intensely so that I can share authentic testimonies of how the Lord helped those in the Bible and how he has transformed my life and many others. Sharing my love for the Lord and his continued faithfulness in my life has spurred her to become more interested in the Christian faith.
Around 60 - 62 A.D., when Paul wrote the book of Colossians from a prison in Rome, the Gnostics were emerging. They believed true knowledge was only accessible to a select few, and they taught that their elitist wisdom was a higher knowledge beyond. In this letter, Paul begins by elevating Christ instead of refuting each false teaching. Speaking directly to the Colossians, Paul teaches that Christ holds all things together, so there is no need for anything else in order to be presented entirely in Christ.
Today’s verse reminds us to make Christ first and foremost in our lives. The Lord is pre-eminent and more than enough. There is no need for a new revelation nor to supplement Christ with anything else. How would you describe the evidence of God’s wisdom in your life? How do you recognize false teaching?
God’s wisdom is limitless and available to all who earnestly seek it. As believers, we can embrace the divine wisdom that God generously offers to all who come to him with an open heart.
Lord, thank you for being the source of all true wisdom and knowledge. Please help us to glean the wisdom we have learned, remove the pressures of this world, and trust in an abundant life through you. We want our lives to reflect your heart and be people that turn to the ultimate source, You, our Heavenly Father. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
