"He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake." Psalm 23:3

Life with all its responsibilities had reached the brim. I took off to the river. Waiting for me was my faithful broken down lawn chair. It was as weary as I was. Recently re-married, my energy was drained due to the responsibilities of a new job, parenting, and making our house feel like home. Sitting at the river’s edge, I felt the stress leave my shoulders because I had hit the re-fresh button of life through conversation with God. “He refresh[ed] my soul.”

Our humanity can’t run at full speed 24/7. God never intended us to deal with constant stress from sun up to sun down. Running a mile a minute, our priorities begin to shift and our spiritual hunger often suffers when in fact we need Him even more. As we fellowship with God and listen to His voice, a healthy life perspective emerges; we once again realize God’s blessings in our lives.

We all need our own river spot for refreshment—a place where God can meet us as we release our burdens to Him and hit the re-fresh button of life.

In his song, The River, Brian Doerksen depicts exactly what we need:

Come and join us in the river. Come find life beyond compare.
He is calling; He is waiting. Jesus longs to meet you there.

Father God in heaven, we need You to refresh us. Our lives are busy but our heart’s desire is to sit with You and experience Your refreshment. Thank You that You promise to refresh us and lead us forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
