As I concluded teaching the women’s Bible study on the book of Ruth at the Naval Station in Newport, Rhode Island, I reflected on God’s incredible and mysterious providence in the narrative of this great book. Our group had meaningful discussions and studied the mighty message of God’s providential care through his lovingkindness (hesed). The Lord faithfully sustained, governed, and guided Ruth and Naomi by being involved in their daily joys and hardships and bringing Ruth a kinsman-redeemer (Boaz). The brilliant short story ultimately points to the gospel of grace and Jesus himself as our redeemer, who still controls, directs, and cares for all things in the universe.
How often do we predetermine what God can and can’t do with people in our lives or ourselves? God’s direction in your life may differ from what you had expected. When reading the book of Ruth, one might think that Ruth and Naomi’s tragedy is part of God punishing them. However, God is actually on a mission to restore them both. Today’s scripture reveals the Lord’s provision through a guardian-redeemer. Just like with Ruth, God’s providence is at work behind every scene in our lives, weaving together the details when we walk in obedience. The powerful work of the Lord’s providence takes what looks like emptiness to us and turns it into fullness.
We must discover and learn how to trust God and his perfect providence in our lives, ultimately bringing him glory. Charles Spurgeon once stated, “Providence is wonderfully intricate. Ah! You always want to see through Providence, do you not? You never will, I assure you. You have not eyes good enough. You want to see what good that affliction was to you; you must believe it. You want to see how it can bring good to the soul; you may be enabled in a little time, but you cannot see it now; you must believe it; honor God by trusting Him.”
Lord, sometimes we fear the unknown and uncertainties in our lives. Each day brings new challenges and change in our lives, so please help us trust your promises and providence and obey you. Thank you for your good and perfect providence. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
Throughout this day: As you reflect on God’s faithfulness in your past, think about how He has restored you in the midst of challenges. Throughout the day listen to “I Still Believe
” by Jeremy Camp.
