It started out as a beautiful day. But by mid-day, the sun had been replaced by a thick layer of dark, angry clouds. We forged ahead in our boat, longing to catch a good-sized trout to justify the three hours we’d already been on the water.

And then it happened! A massive “BOOM” reverberated across the water and my daughter’s hair stood straight up. A mean storm was approaching and we needed to get off the water fast! The power that was about to be unleashed in the electrical storm could split a tree or potentially electrocute us.

The mega-joules of power unleashed in a lightning bolt pales in comparison to the incredible power available to us through the Spirit. In fact, Paul tells us that the same life-giving power that raised Jesus from the grave is ours in the Spirit, if we have believed in Christ (Romans 8:11).

Imagine that! The same resurrection power that brought life to Jesus in the tomb is available to us through his Spirit, who resides in us once we believe in Jesus (Romans 8:2, 9-11). What incredible hope and empowerment this brings to live the kind of life God wants us to live!

Almighty God, thank You that You have given me Your Spirit to live within me and to empower me to live a life that glorifies You. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I may faithfully obey You and Your will. In Jesus name, amen.

Take Action

Read Romans 8:1-17 and Ephesians 5:15-21. Reflect on what Paul writes about the Holy Spirit and his empowering presence in your life. Actively yield yourself to the Spirit, asking him to fill and empower you so that you will faithfully obey God during the day. Then trust God to fill and empower you!
