Today’s passage clearly leads us to understand the truth that our past is passed.

I used to live in my past in my mind. Picture with me a hamster in a wheel. It goes around and around, and then slowly swings to a stop. It is a futile activity. It gets you nowhere and yields nothing except physical exhaustion.

Has your mind ever gone round and round with thoughts from your past? It also is a futile activity. It changes nothing and only creates emotional fatigue. Why do we persist in bringing up our past? It is like chewing our food and then bringing it back up.

Regurgitating our negative past experiences in our mind serves no purpose. It occupies our mind from being productive.

Today is a new day. The old has passed away! We have a clean slate, and a new supply of God’s mercy and grace. Let us step out into the new year celebrating our freedom in Christ.

Father, thank you for making all things new the moment we accepted Jesus as our personal Savior. Our old self was crucified with Christ, and buried with him through baptism into death. Then we were raised into the newness of life to enjoy you through intimate communion. Thank you for your forgiveness of our sins - past, present, and future. Amen.
