A man walks down the middle of a road. There are no lights on, no moon, and he’s dressed in all black. A car drives down the same road. The car has no lights on but swerves and misses the man at the last second. How does this happen?

Easy, it’s daytime. If I hadn’t given the answer right away most people would rack their brains trying to figure it out when the answer is so obvious.

A lot of times we are our own worst enemy. We try to figure things out when the answer is obvious.

Many times, Jesus’ commands and teachings are quite simple. He is sometimes very direct in what he says. Yet, we may still think, “Well, maybe he meant this.”

In today’s passage, Jesus tells Thomas and the disciples that he is the way, the truth, and the light. “NO ONE comes to the Father except through me.” Still, we hesitate to turn to Jesus. We depend on the wrong things to give us life: our spouse, a self-help book, a friend, an activity, or a worldly comfort.

There is a Jesus-sized hole in your heart. Until you confess your sins and believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection for you. Only he can fill that void. Only Jesus can give you the life you are looking for. Food, drugs, sex, fun, and work are all poor substitutes because none of these will make you whole. You were made to seek Jesus and when you ignore the obvious answer made clear in his Word, you will likely find yourself going down a dark path.

The great news is that it is never too late for you to turn to Jesus and ask him to erase your wrongs and enable you through his Spirit to follow Jesus and make him your priority.

Dear God and Heavenly Father, thank you for being the answer to whatever is bothering me. Help me to be stronger and wiser. Help me to surrender my desires to you and know that you are the answer. Help me, too, to show others that you are the answer. The battle against sin is not ours but yours, and I know you are faithful to deliver me if I trust you. I declare victory over sin and worldly comforts in the mighty name of Jesus, through the power of his Spirit in me. Amen.
