Relationships can be hard, especially when a friend’s actions (or inaction) are hurtful and the relationship takes a turn for the worse. Even then God wants us to love, to try to reconcile, and to rebuild what two people or more have built together.
The Bible tells us of a relationship that Jesus had that was tested – the friendship between Jesus, Lazarus and Lazarus’ two sisters. Jesus heard that Lazarus was very ill. Instead of rushing to his side, he waited four days to go see Lazarus and by that time he had died. Mary wanted Jesus there earlier for she thought that her brother could have been saved if he had been. Jesus’ inaction tested that relationship. But Jesus had another plan; to show the world the power of God by raising Lazarus from the dead. Jesus loved Lazarus (and his grieving family) enough to wait!
There are times when it seems impossible to save a friendship. Yet Jesus tells us to love as he has loved us. Instead of ending the relationship, why not try to come up with ways to love like Jesus and make the relationship better? Prayer is the first step. When we pray for our friend, God will hear and answer. He can make our love strong again. Communication is also key to a better relationship. God wants to empower his children to love one another by honestly and kindly talk out their problems and find ways to resolve conflict.
Jesus, thank you for demonstrating your love for me most importantly by your death on the cross. Thank you also for your command to love others as you have loved me. Please empower me to trust and obey you by loving others in your strength, even when it is difficult. Amen
