In elementary school, I had a Physical Education class. Everyone was required to attend the class, but I didn’t like it because I am not athletic at all! We would play kickball and divide into teams.
Team captains would take turns picking who they wanted on their team. I would always be one of the last people picked. It was always embarrassing, but I didn’t blame them. I was not athletic and wouldn’t greatly help in winning the game.
I believe it’s an instinct to want to be first in something. We often feel like we are missing out or unwanted if we aren’t first. We feel left out regarding the things of this world. However, in the Kingdom of God, it’s different. In Matthew 20:16, we find that Jesus says, “So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
People in the world value what abilities you have and what you have to offer them. Those abilities and even your wealth, or inherited status determine your role in the world. However, humility, faith, and how you serve others are of greater value in the Kingdom of God.
When you are overlooked by your peers, God sees you. God sees everything you may consider a shortcoming in yourself as unique. He has a special place for you in the Kingdom of God.
Dear God, Please help me remember that my value comes from you, and not from things the world may consider important. Lead me on the path you want me to take. Amen.
Throughout the day: Remind yourself as often as necessary, “I have value and a special place with God.”
