Do we have a Holy Spirit mindset, or a fleshly one?
What’s more important to us, God’s desires or our own? I will be honest and tell you that my Bible study time has not been the best over the years. Over the last year, I’ve started studying the Bible daily. In the past, I haven’t been consistent with my Bible study and prayer time. I let myself be distracted by life. Instead of spending time with God in his Word and in prayer first, I would fill my time with TV shows and movies that did nothing for my spiritual walk. I was putting my desires above God’s desires. My mindset was wrong, and my priorities backward.

When I took time to consider it, I felt like I was barely maintaining my walk with Christ. I was not feeling or seeing much growth in my Christian walk. I went to church three times a week. However, that alone didn’t help me grow abundantly. I needed that extra study and prayer time to dig deeper into what God wanted for me.

As today’s scripture says, we can have our minds set on either what our flesh (our sinful human nature) desires, or on what the Holy Spirit of God desires. I was too busy with what my flesh wanted, and needed to change my focus to living by the Spirit. God began to convict me about my lack of Bible study and prayer life. When I was spiritually weak, he reminded me where my strength came from. Through the conviction of the Holy Spirit, I realized I was putting my desires above God’s desires. So, I set aside a specific daily prayer and Bible Study time.

I can tell you I’ve felt a significant change in my Christian walk. My desire to serve God is more important; my walk with God is more profound, and my steps are lighter. I feel like a student that is well-prepared for an exam. As the questions of life come my way, I know where to find the answers. The Holy Spirit has helped me see that putting God’s desires above mine truly does lead to life and peace. Maybe you are struggling in your Christian walk and not sure why. I encourage you to adopt the Holy Spirit mindset and find life and peace.

Dear God, teach me to learn from your Word and your Spirit, and help me always to put your desires for my life above my own. Amen.

Throughout this day: Ask the Holy Spirit to show you God’s desires for your life.
