As I reflect on the question, “What does it mean to be generous?” I find myself thinking back on the many times others have shown generosity to me. Each of those moments has been meaningful and impactful. Yet, none compare to the ultimate act of generosity—God giving His Son, Jesus. The gift of salvation is the most generous and life-changing gift I have ever received.
1 John 3:16–18 reminds us that true love is shown not just in what we say, but in how we live. Jesus didn’t love us with empty words; He gave everything. And now, as His followers, we’re called to do the same—to love in action and in truth.
However, generosity is more than an action—it’s an attitude of the heart. True generosity is selfless, compassionate, intentional, and empathetic even when it’s difficult. Jesus displayed each of these qualities, showing us what it means to live generously. He invites us to reflect his love daily- even in the smallest acts of kindness.
In a world that often feels rushed, competitive, and self-focused, we have the opportunity to slow down and reflect Christ by showing kindness to those around us. We don’t have to spend millions of dollars or make grand gestures. Even small acts done consistently with sincerity are often the most impactful to others.
The heart that seeks God naturally overflows with generosity. It’s a mindset that values others and gives without expecting anything in return. Let’s choose to live generously today, pointing others to the One who gave everything for us.
Dear God, today, may I live with open hands and a willing heart, ready to share the goodness you’ve poured into my life.
Throughout this day: Look for one simple way to show generosity to someone today.
