I love the game of basketball. I have played for 25-plus years. I’ve never been the star on the teams I played for, though. I’m what my coach calls a “glue guy”. Not the best he has, but I can do everything well — defense, rebound, shoot, communication.

My coach always says a lot of the stuff I do to help the team win never shows up in the stat sheet, but without it they’d have lost a lot of games. That really means a lot to me. Sure, I want to hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer and have everyone swarm me with congratulations. But I can find peace and joy in knowing that, even though I’m not out in the front, I still play a vital role.

I feel like the Holy Spirit gets that reputation. “In God we trust” is everywhere. Preachers everywhere say, “Give your life to Jesus, it’s the best decision you will ever make.” But the third person of the Trinity is like the glue guy. When you are up late at night and just don’t know what to do, the Holy Spirit is there to comfort you (John 14:16). When you are about to make that very wrong decision and you feel that tug to stop, that’s the Holy Spirit giving you guidance.

We should make an effort to thank God for the Holy Spirit every single day. He never fails, never leaves us, and never lets us down. What better friend could we ask for?

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending us the Holy Spirit to be with us every day. Thank you for not forgetting about us even when we forget about you. Put it on our hearts to let the Holy Spirit shine in our actions and in our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
