Jericho was a strategic and powerful city and Israel could not get to the Promised Land while it was still standing. It was tightly guarded because the people inside were afraid. The two spies sent to this city found help from Rahab (Joshua 2). In Psalm 20:7, the Bible reminds us: “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”

Forty thousand armed strong men were ready to fight for Israel. But the Lord’s strategy was different as always! Close to Jericho city, Joshua saw a man standing in front of him with a sword, and Joshua asked him to identify himself. He was the commander of the Lord’s army. (Joshua 5: 13-14)The Lord’s strategy was to march around the city once a day for six days with priests blowing trumpets. This was serious worship time! On the seventh day, they were to march seven times and after one long blast on the ram’s horns, all the people were to shout their loudest! The walls of Jericho would collapse at that moment. Humanly speaking this didn’t make sense at all! God tells us so many times to trust him with our issues that only He can handle but we sometimes frantically try to solve them in our own strength!

This battle was about worship and devotion to God, walking in God’s presence. The walk of faith in God caused the fall of Jericho. Rahab and her family were spared because she believed God and had hidden the spies. If the spies remembered their promise to Rahab for sparing them, how much more will God remember us when we walk by faith and trust him! We have this record to remind us now and for many generations to come!

The success was because of the walk of obedience! What a faith testimony this is to us today. Dear Lord, thank you for reminding me that when I’m facing my enemies, giants or difficulties in my life today no matter how challenging, you are already in control and I can totally depend on you. Help me to know that constructed walls can collapse through your power no matter how high they may appear. Amen.

Meditate on: “For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty Savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” Zephaniah 3:17
