“Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” Acts 1:6

In the amazing days after Jesus’ resurrection, there was one question at the dinner table above all others that the disciples kept asking Jesus: “When will you return and restore the kingdom?”

They longed to see the powerful fulfillment and conclusion of His mission. When could they expect that to happen?

In response, Jesus taught them two critical lessons:

First, the time for those events is held safely in the Father’s hands. Until then, we are called to live patiently with certain expectation as our living hope.

Second, their great concern should not be for the end of His work but for the beginning of theirs. Jesus taught them a more important lesson! For their work, carrying His message to the ends of the earth, they would receive the power of the Holy Spirit.

Often today, the power of the Holy Spirit is presented as a tool enhancing personal quality of life, for achieving our own purposes. To be sure there are great personal benefits to walking in the power of the Holy Spirit, but His power is given above all for the work of telling others about Jesus.

There is wonderful news in this! God does not ask us to change the minds or hearts of other people. That’s His work. Our work is faithful trust in the Holy Spirit’s power to tell the story of Jesus.

Holy Spirit, please give me the wisdom to understand that the work of evangelism is not something I do on my own. Thank you for inviting me to be part of this ministry. Would you give me courage to step our courageously and boldly share you love with the world around me? Amen.
