“The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation.” Psalms 33:11 (NASB)

Seven years ago, my earthly father stepped through eternity’s door. As I reflect on his influence, I think of the numerous times he offered profound and timely counsel, especially during the difficult seasons of my early adulthood. I listened, but frequently resigned myself to the counsel of my own heart and understanding. In time, I discovered that dad’s counsel was correct. Similarly, how often, as believers, do we disregard our Heavenly Father’s counsel and defer to our own counsel and understanding?

Today’s autonomy driven culture endorses self-sufficiency and continually compels people to pursue the plans and counsel of their own heart. However, biblical patriarchs, including the Psalmist, wisely sought heavenly counsel for all their earthly endeavors. Jesus consistently received counsel from His Father to faithfully fulfill his mission. Jesus reiterated that to live fulfilling lives, we must also seek counsel from our Heavenly Father. Are you open to regularly accepting and applying fatherly counsel?

Although, at times, my earthly father’s advice was imperfect, I wish I had listened more to his endearing counsel. Thankfully, our Father in Heaven is always available to offer timely counsel to a humble heart. He is an ever-present Father whose counsel is always appropriate for any cause and circumstance. He does not want us to be spiritual orphans. He desires to cultivate a relationship with us founded on truth, trust, and transparency. It is our blood-bought privilege to call Him “Abba Father” – our spiritual daddy – our wonderful counselor, indeed!

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You Father that we can come to You at any time. Create in me an insatiable hunger for Your will and Word. Give me ears to hear Your voice. Protect me from my own limited understanding. May I seek Your counsel in every situation and circumstance in my daily life.

Take Action

Reflect on Jesus’ relationship with His Father. Pray and ask the Lord to help you evaluate the primary sources of counsel in your life. As you pray, write down your current life concerns and circumstances. Seek His counsel through prayer and reflecting on His Word.

It’s also a great idea to seek the godly counsel of a Christian you respect. One of our mentors would also love to listen to and encourage you.
