“If only I could have everything easy, I would have peace.” Have you ever had this thought? And is it true?

This verse says that David feels like a weaned child with its mother. Weaned from milk. Weaned from the simple things that he has enjoyed and needed.

The weaned child is now on solid food - food that the child may not really desire, as milk has been the easiest food. The access is easy. The child only needs to get close to the mother and to reach out. However, solid food is necessary for continued growth.

The mother is still around, but the child’s circumstances have changed. The quicker the child accepts not to have access to the milk anymore, the faster peace will set in.

Sometimes, we just want everyone to do the right thing by us. “Why can’t they do this or not do that?” we wonder. But they do the opposite of what we would expect. And we have a choice about how to respond.

David said, I have calmed and quieted myself. I choose peace. This means he was not so concerned about why things he longed for were not available to him. Some life answers were too wonderful for him. He trusted God. A form of meekness, not weakness. That’s why David wrote in another Psalm that the humble or meek enjoy an abundance of peace and inherit the earth. Psalm 37:11

We’re better off calming ourselves and letting things go. We choose peace and we try to be at peace with others.

Father God, I ask you to help me to calm and quiet my soul. Help me tap into an abundance of peace no matter what I’m going through, in Jesus’ name.

Throughout this day: Do you have concerns about something or someone in your family that you simply can’t understand? Sometimes we need to let go of the unanswered questions to have peace in abundance. And whilst we’re at peace internally, it’s easier to be at peace with others.
