Is there such a thing as a perfect cup of tea? Probably not. My perfect cup is loose-leaf Earl Grey Supreme steeped in a French press for three minutes in two hundred–degree water. Other people may have their own perfect cup.
Is there such a thing as a perfect relationship? Again, probably not. In returning the runaway slave, Onesimus, to Philemon, Paul pleaded for Onesimus to be treated as a “dear brother” (Philemon 1:16) upon his return to Philemon rather than be put to death. It is Paul and Philemon’s strong relationship in Christ that allows Paul to make this request that went against the cultural norm.
Paul’s prayer for Philemon suggests that “perfect” relationships are steeped in Christ. “With us in the faith” suggests Philemon belonged to a partnership of Christians living out their faith, including Paul, who was imprisoned in Rome. Paul’s care for Philemon’s well-being shows in his desire for Philemon to have a deeper “understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ.” Paul’s encouragement of his friend builds a picture of trust, and the outcomes of Philemon’s actions bring comfort to Paul.
Like the relationship between Paul and Philemon, our partnerships in Christ are bound together by Christ’s love. Our prayers unite us with one another and remind us of our commitment to Christ. They can act as a gentle reminder of righteous living and an encouragement for others to live in the same manner as Christ. Our encouragement of one another refreshes the spirit. This stirring of accomplishment gives a person courage to move forward with their mission for Christ and grow the fellowship of believers.
Dear Father, thank you that fellowship grows most when the base of our brew is love. Help us to add flavor with “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience” (Colossians 3:12), but more than any of these, let your love bind us together in Christ, forming strong relationships that help us to navigate life together. Amen.
