Growing up, I would remember with great detail how my father would occasionally take us to the airport. I loved staring at the big planes when they took off and finally disappeared, leaving my imagination to run wild. I am not sure if I ever cared to know the destination. The excitement of seeing them take off was enough.

I wonder what the scene looked like when Jesus ascended to heaven. Were the disciples excited, or did many thoughts cross their anxious minds? Of course, they had been told the destination — heaven. They also knew that Jesus was the only way to the Father. At the height of that moment, there was a sudden interruption by two robed men. “Why do you stand here looking at the sky?” Their next words greatly comforted these disciples. “Jesus will come the same way you have seen him go.” It will not be a phenomenon orchestrated by man — it will be purely heavenly.

The Bible records that “every eye will see him” (Rev 1:7). Have we stopped staring at the sky, expectantly waiting for him and desiring his return? Or has the excitement of life clouded our judgment so that we no longer yearn to see Jesus?

What is certain is that Jesus will come to reign and rule. When he comes, will we be found ready? Will our garments be spotless, having been cleansed by our soon coming King?

Loving Jesus, my heart is longing for your return. Guide me on this journey by the help of your Holy Spirit to live right so that I enjoy my inheritance in your kingdom. Amen.
