There is a story about a guy trapped on top of his house. As flood waters rise, a man in a canoe stops by and offers help. The guy says, “No, God will save me.” The waters continue to rise and a motorboat comes by to offer aid. Our guy says “No, God will save me.” The waters continue to rise to dangerous levels, and a helicopter comes by to save our friend. Again he refuses. “No, God will send me a sign that He is going to save me.”

Eventually the guy drowns. When he gets to heaven he immediately pleaded to God, “Father, why didn’t you save me, since I put my faith in you?” God replies, “I sent you a canoe, a motorboat, and a helicopter. What other signs were you looking for?”

This is a prayer I ask of God on a regular basis. Show me a sign.

God, please show me sign I should buy this house, that this is the job I need to take, or that this is the right school for my children. I still doubt Him sometimes and ask God to please send me a sign that the first sign He sent was really from Him and accurate.

What’s the point of a sign if you do not trust it? Sooner or later you have to just trust. If you get to a stop sign, decide not trust it, and just run through it without heed, bad things may happen. Trust the signs from God.

Heavenly Father, please teach me to recognize your signs and what they look like. Please help me with my unbelief when I do come across your signs, so that I do not miss my blessings, or worse, get myself into troubling situations. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Go Deeper — Are you in tune with the Spirit of God to recognize His signs? If you do not think so, spend some time studying the Word and meditating to allow the Spirit of God to guide you. Then watch for what He does with opened faith-eyes.
