At my last checkup with my doctor, my bloodwork showed some issues that require me to make some lifestyle changes. So, because of that, every evening I try to walk at least a mile. Our gravel driveway has a small hill and is three tenths of a mile long. There are chunks of rock to watch for, along with holes made by critters and a washed-out spot created by the excessive rain we have received. You have to be alert and watch your step. It can be challenging to navigate at times.
One evening, as I was walking, I realized that there was a shade from trees on part of my path. I was thankful for that shade because it was so hot and humid that evening. The temperature made the walk difficult, but that shade provided some relief. The shade on my path didn’t change the washed-out spots in the drive or the holes the critters made. However, it helped me cope with the path I walked.
I found myself comparing this shade to the rest God provides us. He may not change the terrain of the path, but he gives shade and rest. God guides our journey. He provides relief when our walk gets tough, and he teaches us along the way. Each path we take will educate us for future struggles and endeavors.
As I finished my walk that evening, I realized that life’s path—like my driveway—isn’t always smooth. But in the midst of it all, God offers his presence as a shelter. His shade doesn’t remove the trials, but it reminds us we are not alone. The next time your path feels long and difficult, look for the shade. It may come through a quiet moment, a kind word, or a reminder from his Word that he is walking with you, offering rest for your soul.
Dear God, Thank you for being with me through all the paths I walk and teaching me in the process.
Throughout This Day: In the tests of life, look for the lesson God is trying to teach you.
