Where do we turn when the tank feels empty and the road ahead looks long? Sometimes life leaves us feeling completely drained, just coasting on empty. We push through, tired and uninspired, trying to make it to the next day on fumes. Like a car stranded in traffic, our emptiness not only affects us but those around us. Frustration grows, patience wears thin, and our sense of purpose slowly fades away.

Ephesians 5:18 draws a clear contrast: “Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” Just as being drunk influences a person’s actions and decisions, being filled with the Holy Spirit shapes our words, attitudes, and choices for good. But there’s an important principle at work: before God can fill us, we must first empty ourselves of what doesn’t belong: pride, selfish ambition, and worldly desires that clutter our hearts and minds.

Choosing God’s filling means intentionally letting go of what drains us and turning to what truly satisfies. When we allow the Holy Spirit to fill every part of our lives, we begin to experience a deep peace, lasting joy, and a renewed sense of purpose that overflows into the lives of those around us. Don’t settle for temporary substitutes that leave you empty and worn out. God’s presence is the better option, always enough, always available, and always ready to restore.

Imagine starting each day with a full tank, confident, secure, and ready for whatever comes your way. That’s the life God offers. Don’t wait until you’re stranded on the side of the road. Come to him daily, and let him fill you so you can live fully, with purpose and power.

Lord, empty me of what doesn’t satisfy. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, your peace, joy, and love. Let my life overflow with your goodness to others. Amen.

Throughout this Day: Notice what you’re tempted to fill up on. Pause, invite God to fill you instead, and watch how he changes your heart.
