From a bird’s eye view, this story in Genesis almost looks predictable. The tension in the air is almost tangible as the two camps contend over the wells of fresh water. The enemy had intentionally pursued Isaac to frustrate his efforts of finding fresh water. Remember, this is the same land that God sent Isaac to live in when he promised to bless him. This promise was realized but it also attracted the attention of jealous men.

Imagine what would have happened if Isaac ceased to dig more wells? Ceased seeking, trying, and trusting? The narrative would have come to an abrupt end and he would not have experienced God’s providence.
God promised that even if trouble comes, we need to take heart, because he overcame the world (John 16:33). Digging more wells was an arduous task but they garnered strength to continue in faith — pressing on despite the opposition.

Sometimes like Isaac, we dig and there is little to show from our efforts. And so our heart becomes weary and grows faint. I implore you to continue digging. Work both physically and spiritually in prayer until the Lord intervenes. When Isaac’s men stood their ground, the Lord created more space for them to prosper in the land. Don’t put your shovel down just yet. Trust the Lord to make room for you and your family.

Heavenly Father, as you were with Isaac and his men, will you be with me today? When opposition strikes give me physical and inner strength to move on with the work that you have entrusted to me as you refresh me always with your living water. Amen.

Throughout This Day: Reflect on this word and find encouragement to forge ahead through the study of God’s Word and reliance on God’s Holy Spirit.
