This passage was written to the children of Israel as a future promise that one day they would be freed from their sins and brought back into the fold. It is a repeated promise emphasized throughout Ezekiel, expressed in various ways.

It is also a beautiful reminder for those of us in Christ. Whenever we begin to fall away from our communion with Christ, there’s the future promise that God is still willing to cleanse us from our sins and save us from them. We don’t have to fear that God will no longer forgive us. We don’t have to worry about Him shutting the door on us for asking for forgiveness once again. There is no limit to His grace. He willingly offers us the ability to be cleansed, even now.

There is no need to wait. We need only to ask, and truly repent, as God reminds His people: “Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?” (Ezekiel 33:10-11)

God was just waiting for them to make the first move in repentance. And He’s doing the same for us.

So how about you, friend? Are you backsliding, too? All it takes is a true heart of repentance, and a prayer asking for forgiveness to be brought back into fellowship with God.

Dear Lord, please forgive me for my sins. Give me a heart that desires to do your will alone. Forgive me for wandering from you, and please bring me back to you. Amen.
