“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25

I can’t think of a more positive person than my friend Malarie.  Even though she faces significant health challenges, she doesn’t wallow in her pain. She doesn’t isolate herself or feel sorry for herself or make others uncomfortable with her disability. More often than not, she has a smile on her face — and there’s no doubt that it’s genuine.

Malarie is generous. Financially generous, yes, but even more importantly, her spirit is generous. She makes people feel at ease. Her laughter comes quick, she’s welcoming, open, warm, and friendly. It’s rejuvenating to spend any time with her; you can’t help but feel just a little lighter after you leave her presence.

When I read today’s proverb, I immediately thought of Malarie. She has every reason to be bitter and self-consumed. She’s in constant pain and her life didn’t turn out the way she thought it would. But God has blessed her with prosperity of spirit because she is so generous of herself. Her positive attitude not only refreshes others, it refreshes herself, too.

How’s your generosity of spirit these days? Do others leave your presence refreshed? Maybe it’s time for an attitude adjustment. You might be surprised by the results.

God, help us to be generous people, to freely give to others what You’ve given to us. May we be refreshing to everyone we meet. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Take Action

Take an honest look at your attitude. Do you give of yourself to others? Would people describe you as positive and refreshing? If not, ask God to change your heart. Then, think of one practical way you can be generous to someone else today... and go do it.
