Any area of spiritual weakness or defeat invites enemy-infiltrators. In the time that this Scripture passage was written, vineyards were hedged around to keep out marauding critters. Any gap in the protective thorny hedge or wall of stones invited trouble. Someone had to stand in the gap while the repairs were being made.

Likewise, when the Israelites began rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem, the enemy came to taunt them and stop the work. The Lord was looking for someone to stand in the gap on behalf of his people. But he couldn’t find a righteous man to do that.

So it is in our time. We have areas in our lives where the enemy has created a gap to gain entrance into our minds. His fiery darts are lies (Ephesians 6:16). If we believe them, they can control our reactions to what is happening in our lives.

How do we plug the gap? We begin the work by renewing our minds through learning the Truth of God’s Word so we can combat the enemy wanting to sneak inside. It is essential that we ask a few trusted friends to pray for us during this reconstruction period.

God’s Word is powerful. It pierces and penetrates between our soul and spirit. Once it is hidden in our heart, that gives the Holy Spirit the material needed to reinforce the strength of our spiritual wall against the evils in this world.

So let him get out his tools and begin working on you today. Open your Bible and read.

Holy Spirit, please help us to live with your transforming word hidden in our hearts. Help us replace old thought patterns with truth-filled patterns that will continually set us free. Amen.

Go Deeper — Cut a piece of bread, muffin or roll in half. Try putting it back together. Not easy. Now use butter, cream cheese, or peanut butter to fill the gap and press the two pieces together. Let that illustrate how God’s Word can fortify you. Okay, lesson over. Go ahead and eat the bread.
