Read Douglas Connelly's book Heaven: Finding Our True Home.

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”  John 14:3

Every fall the college I attended celebrates homecoming. And each year I receive an invitation to join them for the festivities. Because of the miles I have only gone once, but wow was it impressive!

Upon arriving to campus we alumni felt like royalty.  Large banners, warm greeters, athletic events, concerts, and a banquet said “Welcome Home.”  And it felt like home as I mingled with old friends and older professors. Wonderful.

Near the end of his earthly ministry Jesus spoke of a similar homecoming with his disciples. He had just told them that he would be betrayed, and that even Peter would deny him. They must have been glum.  Jesus encouraged them saying, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:1-3)

Sometimes I get down on life and wonder if God has good plans for me. And while I know He is sufficient to meet my needs on this earthly journey, it’s good to know he’s got an extravagant homecoming planned for those who believe in him.

Do you believe in God and his Son Jesus? Do you wish for a sure plan to live with God after your life is over?  You can be there for that grand homecoming one day.

Dear God, I do believe in you, and in the saving work of Jesus for the forgiveness of my sins. Thank you for Jesus’ work of salvation, and for the homecoming I may enjoy one day with you. Amen.

Take Action

Do you live with eternity in mind? Today, meditate on the prospect of that great homecoming, and do something to help build God's kingdom on earth.
