What does it mean to fear the Lord? Are we being called to a lifetime of dread? Certainly not! It’s a call to hate all evil (Proverbs 8:13). Joshua had seen firsthand what it meant to fear the Lord; he had witnessed numerous miracles both during Moses' time, and since he took over leadership from Moses, including plagues and God's tremendous deliverance. He had learned to trust, serve, and walk in obedience, and now he has summoned the entire nation to remind them of all God had done for them, because people have a tendency to forget. Joshua declared to the Israelites, “You have seen what the Lord has done.” This chapter vividly shows how the Lord cared for the nation of Israel. He raised leaders to guide them; in the face of war, God safeguarded the nation and provided for all of their needs.
As humans, we frequently find ourselves exaggerating our problems while forgetting what the Lord has done for us in the past. When faced with a difficult situation, it is easy to blame God: “If God cares, why would he allow pain to come our way?” God showed kindness to the nation of Israel, but they let their guard down during their time of peace and abundance. They reverted to their old habits, as we all do from time to time, believing that we can handle life alone. At the extreme, some people even reject the Truth – Jesus.
This chapter not only portrays God's loving nature, but it also eloquently depicts God's faithfulness as he stands by his people to assist them. However, as we see over and over in the Old Testament, the people did not serve with sincerity; rather, they continued to worship their foreign gods. They battled to get rid of corrupt items that would always invite God's wrath. Their commitment was half-hearted. Joshua summoned the entire nation to wholehearted commitment to the Lord. You and I are also being urged to return to the Lord, forsake all that has divided our dedication and serve him faithfully.
Heavenly Father, forgive me for not serving with sincerity. Today, I let go of everything else that takes your rightful place in my life. I choose life, and dedicate my life to serving you. Help me to be faithful, so that I might fulfil your enormous purpose and further your mission here on earth. Amen.
