It’s so surreal. Only hours ago I learned about the passing of my former employer, friend and adopted grandfather. Even though I’m writing this devotional shortly after his death in April, I’m sure the grief in my heart will still be as fresh when it is published in July
I get a sick feeling in my gut when I think of him. Like I've been sucker punched. I still remember being told he passed away, and as the tears fell, my heart became heavy with guilt and regret. There were so many times I should have connected with him but chose the busyness of life instead, believing I had all the time in the world to text him a cheery greeting or make plans for a music lesson.
Sadly, his absence is one of many, near and dear to me, whose smile I won't see nor have the joy of conversing with again. Instead, the anticipation of spending time with that loved one is replaced with memories of previous get-togethers and coming face to face with the depth of today's verse - a strong reminder of the finiteness of life.
Each life has an ending and only God knows when that will occur. Life is a precious gift that the Lord has ordained, and the people that he places in each season of life are equally precious. I need to be more keenly aware of this truth in each moment, living out my life to the fullest with Christ and others. I don’t want to have any more regrets.
There's only so much time that you and I have been blessed to enjoy. May we, as believers, be steadfast in numbering our days and remaining conscious of life's fleeting ways. Let us not waste this gift God has given us, especially when spending time with others is involved.
Lord Jesus, help me to honor you in this passing of my dear adopted grandfather by living out each day well with you and as I spend time with friends and family. Remind me of how fleeting and precious life is in order that I would live each day to the fullest. In your mighty name I pray. Amen.
Throughout This Day: Reach out to some people you haven't seen or talked to in a while.
