Passing the Baton of Faith

Our daughter, Hope, was a sprinter in high school track. One of the most exhilarating races she was part of was the 4x100 relay. In that race, every runner mattered, but the most important moment was the passing of the baton. It had to be done intentionally, carefully, and at the right time for a smooth transition. A dropped baton would affect the entire race.In many ways, this is a beautiful image of the Christian life and the spiritual legacy we are called to pass on. In Deuteronomy 6:6-7, God commands the Israelites to pass down his laws to their children, so that his truths will always be in their hearts. Like runners in a relay, we are entrusted with the “baton” of faith to carry his spiritual truths and then place them in the hands of the next generation so they too can run their race well for the glory of God.

What type of legacy will you leave behind? I want my legacy to be one like Paul is talking about in today’s passage; a legacy so strong that it was noticed in four generations. That is powerful! Paul understood that the Christian faith was never meant to stop with one person. It was meant to be received, lived out, and then handed to others who will continue sharing God’s truths.

Are you leaving a spiritual legacy to others? Each of us is handing off a baton, but is it the baton of Christian faith? May we run our race faithfully with our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, carrying his truth with endurance and grace. And may we intentionally pass along a legacy of abiding in God’s word, walking in obedience, trusting his will,being led by the Holy Spirit, and proclaiming the faithfulness of God. Long after our race is finished, may the generations behind us glorify God, and in turn faithfully pass the baton of the Christian faith to those who follow after them.

*Father, please help me to be intentional in passing down a spiritual legacy. God, I want my life to be a reflection of you, so that when people look at me, they don’t see me, but they see you. Help me to leave a rich spiritual legacy for my children, grandchildren, and those around me. In Jesus’s name, Amen. *
