In an old movie I used to watch when I was younger, a man supposedly discovers he has uranium on his property. He discovers this out of a strange phenomenon. He holds the plug-in of an electric fan, and the fan runs. Basically, he discovers that he’s a human battery!

As a member of the twenty-first century, I am very dependent on power sources. Nothing compares to the panic I feel when I have a little red slice of battery on my phone, or get a message from my computer that “your Mac will sleep soon…” As weird as it sounds it would be great to be able to power my devices myself. But that’s not the way it works for me, or for old Pa Kettle either. See, in this old movie, Pa discovers that the radiation was not coming from himself or from his property, but from an old pair of Army coveralls he had been wearing. It was a borrowed power source.

I think sometimes, I forget that I am really not my own power source. I think I can love people or manage my emotions on my own. Like Pa Kettle, though, I am dependent on other power sources besides myself, not only in technology, but in my spiritual walk. Holy Spirit, who dwells in me, and in all believers, is the source I need to constantly be plugged into. When I’m feeling sad, he comforts me. When I’m angry or anxious, he helps me take a step back and see the bigger picture.

Holy Spirit is the best outlet, even better than a uranium-powered Pa Kettle!

Thank you, Father, for Holy Spirit, who gives us power to be like you. I truly have no power source but him.

Throughout this Day: How do you see Holy Spirit being the power source in your life?
