When I think about personal issues to work on, one of the main things is a fear of the future. I used to say that I had a fear of getting old. But of course, there is only one alternative to that, and I certainly don’t want to die any time soon!

Life is challenging anyway, but I think it is especially hard for those who don’t have a family of their own. It is very important for me to have my parents and siblings close, and have the best network of friends that I can. It is easy for me to isolate myself at times, but we were never meant to live life alone.

There are times, however, when we will all feel alone. It is even possible to feel alone while surrounded by people. That’s where this verse comes in. The Psalmist exclaims in this beautiful description of God’s persistent presence, that there is literally nowhere he can go where God is not with him. If we know and abide in Christ, his Spirit is always with us. When I feel lonely, I can remember this persistent presence, and have hope.

There was a year of my life when I was in a place where I had the opportunity to learn some worship songs in sign language. This was a very dark time of my life, and many of these songs gave me hope. As I bring to mind one of these songs, “Never Alone,” I know that the hope I found back then can continue with me now. Because there is absolutely nowhere I can go where God is not already there, nothing I can face that he has not already seen. I am truly never alone.

Dear Father, thank you from the bottom of my heart that I am never alone. Your precious Holy Spirit is always with me. Thank you for the loving people in my life as well. I know there is hope for the future, for me and for everyone who knows you. Help us carry that hope to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Throughout this day: What do you do when you feel lonely? What is one thing you can do to help you remember that God is always with you?
