I sat in the darkness of my bedroom. The walls seemed to crawl even closer with every breath I took, the voices in my head louder than reason, and I felt … alone. No one was around at 1 AM after a bad dream had left me shaken, and I remember praying the words, “God? You’re there, right? You didn’t leave me alone, right? I don’t want to be alone right now…”

When Moses died, all eyes turned to Joshua, who had been groomed for this very moment. I can’t begin to imagine the pressure he must have felt having to fill Moses’s shoes alongside the fact that his mentor had just passed, leaving him … alone.

Seeing his insecurities, fears, and doubts rising, God spoke directly to the heart of them, saying: “Be strong and courageous. Don’t be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

Those words were his gentle reminder to Joshua that he wasn’t alone, that God would be holding his hand into battle, and that no matter what happened, he would be right there beside him. We’ve all experienced the feelings of being alone and insecure, but the same promise that God whispered to Joshua all those years ago is still true for us today.

You are not alone. God will never leave you. He will never give up on you, and you can trust him wholly and follow wherever he leads, knowing that he wants only the best for you.

Father, Thank you for sending your Spirit to dwell continually in my heart. I am never alone, because you are with me, guiding me, strengthening me, living in and through me. Thank you for this amazing privilege and joy! Amen.

Throughout This Day: Every time you feel frightened, powerless or alone, thank God for dwelling in you through his Holy Spirit.
