We often hear about “freedom of choice,” and choices are presented throughout Scripture, as they are throughout our lives. Making wise choices is critical because they have the potential to affect our lives for better or for worse.
Sometimes, a door opens, and our excitement prompts us to rush through it. It is essential to pause, pray, and seek the Lord's guidance on all decisions. God gives us his words to guide us. James reminds us in James 1:5, ”If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Recently, my husband was offered a new position in another state. While the job seemed exciting, and the location incredible, we prayed, paused, and asked God for wisdom and to direct our choice. Neither of us had peace about taking the position, and looking back, we are very grateful he did not take the job offer.
God commands us to make wise choices, and he provides us with sufficient information to make informed ones. The information he gives us in the Bible instructs and teaches us about his holiness, sin, and what will happen if we believe his promises or not. As children of God, we have the incredible benefit of having the Holy Spirit, who gives us clarity and peace as we utilize scripture, pray, and seek godly counsel.
When we anchor our decisions in God’s truth, we can walk forward with confidence, knowing he lovingly directs our steps to his best path. Our reliance on God will provide us with the freedom and confidence to make the best choices.
Lord, help me to make wise choices that lead me into your presence, and please give me discernment so that my choices will glorify you. Thank you for your guidance and wisdom when I face difficult decisions in all matters. In Jesus’ name, amen.
