God's design for us is not to live in the comfort and safety that the world can offer. He wants us to trust him.

Many times we try to protect ourselves from reaching our limits, forgetting that our sufficiency comes from God. So what we do to ensure our well being is to be selfish with our time and resources.

But Jesus lived differently. He didn't try to protect himself. He lavishly spent himself for God and for others. He attended to people's needs by not depending on himself but on God's power. He went against the systems and risked his life to show the true way to eternal life.

Throughout history, we see people like Daniel, Joseph and David all lived a life of trusting God. This call is for us too. It's a call to simply obey God’s commands, trust him, and then watch as he upholds you in his arms.

The opposite of walking in trust is living in control. The problem is that control is a cheap imitation of power. Many of us forfeit walking in real power because we are clinging so tightly to control. The desire for control is created and fueled by fear. Seeking to be in control causes us to live in worry. As parents, we fear that our child will go astray, so we are anxious every time we don't know where they are. We worry about working enough hours so we can pay our bills and have enough to eat.

But God is in control. If you want to walk through life in his power, that requires trust. Trust in God's promise that he will perfect that which concerns you. Psalm 138:8 says, “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands”.

Trust in his unchangingness (Hebrews 13:8. Trust in his promise that all things work together for good to those who love the Lord and who are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).

Trust in his power that can do immeasurably more than you and I can ask or think (Ephesians 3:20-21). Trust in his mercies that are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). Trust that he is doing something new (Isaiah 43:19).

Trying to be in control of everything is attractive, perhaps even easy. But God has not called us for easy. He has called us to walk in real power, the power of his Spirit, and real power is in the place of trust.

Lord Jesus, thank you for showing me how to live a life of trusting you. May I not lean on my own understanding but trust that you will uphold me as I step out into the unknown. Amen.
