It’s no secret that Christianity and hospitality go hand in hand, and the way we welcome others should be noticeably different from the world. Hospitality is welcoming and feeding others without thought of personal gain, and sharing what we have with whomever the Holy Spirit sends.

As believers, we are called to serve others without grumbling and maintain calmness and self-control. I have always enjoyed fellowship and having others over. When I was much younger, though, I would grumble and not have a good attitude when preparing to host others. The Holy Spirit revealed to me that I was not seeking him in prayer and that my expectations of elaborate table settings and gourmet meals did not need to be met. He reminded me that his love and power are often displayed in moments of our relationships.

While living in Hawaii, I was inspired and learned much about the gift of hospitality. We attended a weekly Bible study group, under the loving leadership of Auntie Cora and Uncle Wendell, called ohana (family). Ohana in Hawaii emphasizes unity and belonging, where everyone is accepted and part of a big family. They would host our group on Wednesday evenings with warmth, love, generosity, meaningful conversations, and delicious Hawaiian, Filipino, and Chinese dishes. They shared the love of Christ by opening their doors and generously giving of their time. These moments created lasting joy, and my heart toward opening my home was forever changed.

Throughout scripture, we are given examples of hospitality. One of the most touching is found in 2 Samuel, when David welcomes Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, by offering him a place at the king’s table and providing for him. David took the initiative to find Mephibosheth, and this biblical narrative illustrates incredible kindness and invitation.

May we all offer hospitality without grumbling, with open hands and hearts, and allow the light of Jesus to shine from our hearts. Let us be less consumed with our schedules, finances, and privacy so we don’t miss the opportunity to be hospitable for the glory of God. We all have unique gifts that can be used to serve others. When we pay attention to those around us, we can display God’s love to others by inviting them to fellowship, to taste and see how good the Lord is.

Lord, thank you for helping me open my home and share your love with others. Please show me how to see how joyous and rewarding it is to be hospitable. Show me how to welcome others with open hands and hearts to bring you glory. In the matchless and holy name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
