Life’s trials can feel heavy, and yet Scripture reminds us that joy is not rooted in our circumstances, but in our Savior. (James 1:2) For a number of years, joy was not evident in my life, and I didn’t give much thought to the importance God places on the fruit of joy in our lives. But as I’ve been learning to abide in Christ and be in complete dependence upon him (John 15:4-5), the Holy Spirit has transformed me, and I have come to know that true Christian joy is both a privilege and a duty.
Even in life’s challenges, we can rejoice, knowing God is sanctifying us and bringing beauty from every trial so that we can glorify him and help others. In scripture, the Lord teaches us that our joy should be full (John 15:11). We are not to sit around and wait for our circumstances to make us joyful; we are commanded to be joyful always (1 Thessalonians 5:16). God intends for every one of his children to exhibit the fruit of joy. As we abide in Jesus, the Holy Spirit will produce the fruit of joy, and we will have continual growth.
The joy produced by the Holy Spirit is not dependent on circumstances; it flows from his presence. When life feels heavy, his joy gives us spiritual strength. On many occasions, I will sing the song “The Joy of the Lord is My Strength “ (Nehemiah 8:10) to our granddaughter, daughter, elderly parents and even to myself to declare faith over feelings and to lift our eyes to the LORD.
As we abide in him and his presence, the Holy Spirit will produce joy that sustains us, renews our weary souls, steadies anxious hearts, and points others to Jesus. To be joyful is to experience the power of the Holy Spirit within us as he makes known to us the path of life, and it is one thing that says to those watching, that our God is in control!
Lord, thank you that the kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy. Help me not to be hindered by life’s distractions and trials, but to fully rely upon you. We are so grateful for all that you did to make it possible for us to live joyful lives. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
